Kaya vs Thagrosh - Kill Box

Circle vs Legion 35 points

So we got lazy and played another Kill Box scenario.  Didn't want to go searching for the new ones and just wanted to get playing.  We played this one with Death Clock.  This is where we both have 30 minutes to complete our game, and if you run out of time you automatically lose. I like having a set amount of time to play but was having trouble with set turn lengths.

Circle:

Kaya, the Wildborne
Feral Warpwolf
Feral Warpwolf
Pureblood Warpwolf
Argus
Wolves of Orboros (10 man squad) with unit attachment
Shifting Stones

Legion:

Thagrosh, Prophet of Everblight
Typhon
Carnivean
Shredder
Warmongers (5 man squad)
Legionaires (10 man squad)
Shepherd

Set Up:

I won the roll and decided to go first.  The Wolves were placed on the far right while Kaya and the Warpwolves took up the centre.  The Argus hung off to the far left.  With advance deployment the Stones were placed in front of the Ferals.

On the  Legion side, Typhon and the Shepherd took up centre placement while the Warmongers faced down the Warpwolves.  On the left flank Thagrosh surrounded himself with the Legionaries and the Carnivean with the Shredder following close.

Circle Turn 1

The Argus casts its Tracker Animus on Feral 1 and then moves into the woods.  Feral 1 warps to increase Armour and follows the Argus through the woods. On the other side of the board the Wolves run forward to mas around a rock further up the field.

Kaya moves into the Stones and casts Occultation on the Wolves to get rid of some Fury.  She then casts Tracker on Feral 2 and Soothing Song to get rid of some built up Fury.  The Pureblood warps for Ghostly and runs just in front of the Stones.  Warpwolf 2 riles for 3 points of Fury and runs to the woods.  With the rest of her battlegroup in the trees, Kaya is teleported there by the Shifting Stones.

Legion Turn 1

Thagrosh starts the turn.  He casts Fog of War then Draconic Blessing on the Legionnaires and Spiny Growth on the Carnivean.  He uses his free animus to cast Spiny Growth on himself then moves up the field.

The Legionnaires run in front of Thagrosh to surround him.  The Carnivean follows up behind them while the Shredder, after going Rabid, follows behind to cast Tenacity on Typhon.  The Warmongers run straight up the centre.  Typhon riles for 2 Fury and then follows them with the Shepherd close behind.

Circe Turn 2

Kaya is able to leach to full Fury and decides to drop Occultation on the Wolves.  This turn becomes mostly about redeployment as nothing seems to be in the right place.

The Argus gives Feral 1 Tracker and advances through the forest.  That Feral warps for Armour and then follows the Argus through the trees.

On the other side the Wolves run forward to set up a flanking maneuver.

Kaya gives Tracker to Feral 2 and advances through the trees.  This Feral also warps for Armour and advances through the trees.  The Pureblood cautiously follows after making himself Ghostly.  The Stones teleported closer to Warpwolf 2.

Legion Turn 2

Thagrosh leeches to full Fury and upkeeps both spells.

The Warmongers run to the midpoint of the board to threaten the Pureblood.  Typhon advances and sprays this Warpwolf doing a total of 12 points of damage.  The Shredder goes Rabid and advances forward so it can put Tenacity on Typhon.

The Legionnaires run forward towards the woods with the Carnivean following them.  This beast stops to spray at the Pureblood as well, doing 11 more points of damage.  It then gives itself Spiny Growth.

Thagrosh then advances, gives himself Spiny Growth then puts Tenacity on everything in range.  That lets the Shepherd move forward to remove the Fury from Typhon.

Circle Turn 3

Kaya leaches to full Fury.

The Stones heal the Pureblood.  The roll was low but they manage to add back 1 point of Spirit.  The Pureblood then gives himself Spellward and moves up to spray the Legionaries, killing 4 of them.

The Argus moves back to give Tracker to Feral 2.  That allows this Warpwolf to warp for Strength and charge a Warmonger and kill it.

The Wolves continue to flank around the right side of the board.  With Kaya's activation to moves toward the trees and grabs both Feral 2 and the Pureblood with Spirit Door.

Legion Turn 3

Thagarosh leaches to full Fury and continues to upkeep both his spells.  With their Vengeance move the Legionaries move toward the Stones until they can get a good charge on them.  They manage to destroy one Stone and injure another.

The Carnivean sprays the Ferals, while one is unhurt the other suffers 9 points of damage.  Typhon moves forward to unleash its spray and kills the Pureblood.  Kaya reeves the Fury.

Thagrosh casts Spiny Growth, Tenacity on the Warmongers, Shepherd and Shredder and then moves forward to the rock and casts Spiny Growth on the Carnivean.  The Shepherd moves beside Thagrosh and takes the Fury off the Carnivean.   The Shredder goes Rabid and puts Tenacity on the Shepherd.

The Warmongers string out through the middle to face off against the Wolves.

Circle Turn 4

More of the same.  Kaya leaches to full Fury and the Wolves continue their flanking run around the outside of the table.

The Argus puts Tracker on Feral 1 and then advances.  Feral 1 advances through the trees to throw the Carnivean at Thagrosh.  The throw doesn't do any damage to the Carnivean due to Spiny Growth but Thagrosh does take 4 points and both are knocked down.

Kaya advances to pull Feral 1 back with Spirit Door and then Heals Feral 2 for 2 points.

Legion Turn 4

Thagrosh leaches to full Fury and upkeeps both of his spells.  Both he and the Carnivean stand up.  The Legionnaries run around the trees.

Typhon advances and sprays Feral 2 for a total of 11 points of damage.  The Carnivean uses its spray on the Stones but does not harm them.

Thagrosh advances and puts Spiny Growth on Typhon and on himself.  He gives Tenacity to one of the Warmongers.

The Shepherd advances and takes the Fury off the Carnivean.  The Shredder goes Rabid and gives Tenacity to another Warmonger then moves behind Thagrosh.  The Warmongers finally charge and kill 4 of the Wolves.

Circle Turn 5

Kaya leaches to full Fury and I realise I'm running out of time and really need to make what I have count.

The Wolves use their Power Swell and charge into the Warmongers and Legionnaries.  They manage to kill two of each group.  The Argus gives Tracker to Feral 1 and then charges to kill two more Legionnaries.

That last throw against Thagrosh was so effective that Feral 1 decides to to try it again.  However, Typhon is a more difficult object to throw.  He's reduced to trying to use his claws to get through the beast.  He does manage to do 8 points of damage.

Kaya gives Tracker to Feral 2 and then Heals him for 2 points, feats and Heals him for 8 more.  All that Feral 2 manages to do is to advance to prepare for the next turn.

Legion Turn 5

Thagrosh leaches to full Fury but doesn't upkeep anything this turn.  The legionaries use their Vengeance to move into the Wolves but aren't able to do anything to them.  The Warmongers, on the other hand, charge and kill two more Wolves, then the Legionaries are able to bring one down with their regular attacks.

Thagrosh casts Draconic Blessing and Spiny Growth on Typhon and then sprays Feral 2.  He doesn't do anything to the beast.  Typhon moves to Feral 1 and does 9 points of damage and the Carnivean kills Feral 2.  The Shepherd removes its Fury.

The Shredder goes Rabid and puts Tenacity on itself then moves to stand behind Typhon.

Circle Turn 6

Kaya leeches to full Fury.  Unfortunately, Feral 1 frenzies and can only hit Typhon for 6 points.

The Argus charges the Shredder and kills it, Kaya uses Spirit Door to bring both the Argus and the Feral back to her position.  The Wolves kill another Legionnaire and wound some Warmongers.  Then my time runs out and Legion wins with the Death Clock in effect.

Afterword:

Myantek:  Once again, I get boxed in by terrain.  I can move through it, thanks to the Argus, but I can't see through it.  That's a bit of a disadvantage when facing Legion.

I really should have been more aggressive with both the Wolves and the Ferals.  Then trying to manage when to use a Power Attack and when to charge in was a balance that I wasn't doing.  I need to play more often to really make the best use of that.  The Carnivean with Thagrosh scares me.  It can certainly bring in the damage and with Death Shroud in effect the Ferals have to warp for Strength just to get their base damage.  Circle has no trouble hitting things, it's the actually damaging something that can be tough.  The two-handed throw is pretty effective with them though.  It's good for things that I know I just can't punch through and then Kaya can pull them out of danger if need be.

Defenstrator:

Well Thagrosh did what he's supposed to, grind down the enemy. Things were going well while I had the Legionnaires and Warmongers to screen my beasts. Once those got killed or dragged away to stop the Wolves from charging me in the back I wasn't able to beat up on the Warp Wolves without risking a counter charge. Unfortunately for Myantek she took one turn too long to get them into position. This let me spray away and kill off the Pureblood at range.

I like the list, but it would have a harder time if the scenario forced the army to spread out more. That would leave more holes for Cricle to exploit, and decrease the strength of the brick formation.

Epic Thagrosh vs Epic Kaya- Contested Ground

Legion vs Circle -750 Points

Myantek had only played epic Kaya a few times so this seemed the perfect match up for my second game with epic Thagrosh. I took the exact same army as my previous game.

Scenario

The scenario was Contested Ground. Divide the battlefield between deployment zones into four 12" wide Territories running north to south. A player controls a Territory if he has one or more models completely within the Territory and his oppononet has no models completely within the Territory. For a unit to control a Territory all models in the unit still in play must be completely within the Territory. A warrior model must have a CMD greater than 1 to control a Territory. Ignore wrecked or inert warjacks, wild warbeasts, and fleeing models when checking for control. A player scores one Control Point for each Terrirtory he controls at the end of each of his turns. Players cannot score Control Points during the first round of the game.

Set Up

I won the role and chose to go first. My set up from left to right wasRaptors, Harrier 1, Seraph 1 with Forsaken 1 behind it, Angelius 1, and Epic Thagrosh with the Swamp Gobbers just over 3 inches behind him. Next behind the forest were Seraph 2, Harrier 2 and Forsaken 2, with Angelius 2 on the far right.

Opposite me from left to right were the Blackclad and Warpwolf, epic Kaya and Laris in the centre, and then the Wold Wyrd, Argus, and Pureblood, with the Wolves on the far right. I had no advance deploy units so Myantek then placed her Sentry Stones about a third of the way in from each side of the board, her Shifting Stones in front of the Warpwolf, and the Bloddtrackers inside the woods. The Bloodtrackers choose Angelius 1 as their Prey.

Turn 1

Legion

Angelius 1 starts the turn simply by running forward. Thagrosh activates next and casts Unnatural Aggression on Angelius 1 and Slipstream. He walks forward, Slipstreams Seraph 2, and castsDragon's Blood on Angelius 2. Angelius 1 moves to put pressure on the Bloodtrackers and runs to the rock in front of them with Harrier 1 also moving there to help screen it. Seraph 1 runs up behind them to help with the counter attack and the Raptors move up beside them, unable to shoot due to the Bloodtrackers Stealth. Forsaken 1 advances and grabs the fury off of Seraph 1. Seraph 2 now Slipstreams and advances through the forest, dragging Thagrosh forward another 2 inches. Harrier 2 riles and runs, meaning I am now running hot but I expect ot loose fury to the Sentry Stones. Forsaken 2 runs after Harrier 2 while the Swamp Gobbers advance and put smoke on Thagrsoh, who is also partially in the trees, and Seraph 2.

Circle

The Sentry Stones begin the turn. Sentry Stone 1 steals a fury from Angelius 1. Its Manniken then attacks Angelius 1 with a boosted attack and Roots it. The same happens for Sentry Stone 2 on Angelius 2.The Wolves of Oboros run up the right flank while on the left flank the Blackclad advances and casts Wilding at the Raptor leader, but misses. The Warpwolf takes +2 ARM and runs into the centre of the Shifting Stones, which then activate and teleport it into the woods behind the Bloodtrackers. The Wold Wyrd then activates and puts Arcane Killer on the Argus before riling and advancing. The Argus walks up beside the Wold Wyrd and the Pureblood moves up behind the Argus. Kaya now activates. She advances, puts Forced Evolution on the Argus and casts Mistwalker. Laris moves up beside her and riles. The Bloodtrackers feel unsupported and decide to retreat deeper into the woods while the Swamp Gobbers put smoke on Kaya and Laris.

Turn 2

Legion

Thagrosh leeches everything and recieves a free fury from the Anthanc to make him full and both Dragon's Blood and Unnatural Aggression are upkeptHe then starts the turn by casting Slipstream and Glory of Everblight before advancing through the trees and Slipstreaming Seraph 2. Angelius 2 advances, Thrusts and boosts damage on Sentry Stone 2 to kill it, and retreats 3 inches via Ravenous. Angelius 1 does the same to Sentry Stone 1. Seraph 2 then advances to a rock in front of Angelius 2 and unloads on the Wold Wyrd and Argus. I don't assign quite enough shots to the Wold Wyrd and it ends up surviving with 2 points left on its Spirit. The Argus takes 6 points of damage. The Raptors charge the Shifting Stones, wounding one and destroying another, before moving back out of the way. Seraph 1 casts Slipstream, drags Harrier 1 up, and shhots at the Bloodtrackers, killing the front 2. Harrier 1 then casts True Strike and charges out of Thagrosh's control area into the Blackclad, killing him. Forsaken 1 just moves up behind the group, bit not too close because of the Raptors, while over on the far right Harrier one runs a bit while Forskaen 2 advances and grabs the fury off it. The Swamp Gobbers then edge forward some more to put the cloud on Thagrosh. I recieve a point at the end of my turn for the Harrier ontroling the far left Territory.

Circle

Kaya leeches for full and upkeeps Forced Evolution. The Wolves of Oboros start the turn out strong by popping their mini-feat Wild Hunt and charging Seraph 2, quickly killing it. Laris runs to the right while Kaya advances and casts Muzzle at Angelius 2, missing it. She then uses her feat Call of the Hunt and teleports to Laris. The Wold Wyrd casts Arcane killer on the Argus again before teleporting off behind Kaya. The Argus then charges Angelius 2 but the rolls don't come through and he only does 6 points of damage to the currently ARM 19 beast before teleporting to Kaya. The Pureblood Warpwolf then teleports in fornt of Kaya followed by the regular Wapr Wolf who takes +2 ARM and stands beside her. The Bloodtrckers then ambuscade Serpah 1, hurting it badly and destroying its mind, while the Shifting Stones position themselves to block Harrier. The Swamp Gobbers advance forward. Things are definately heating up. While the Warpwolves didn't do anything Myantek now has most of her army near Thagrosh while he is relatively alone.

Turn 3

Legion

Thagrosh leeches for full and upkeeps Dragon's Blood. Harrier 1 frenzies and does 2 points to a nearby Sentry Stone. Thagrosh heals Seraph 1 for a point, casts Slipstream and Glory of Everblight, and uses his feat Dragon Storm (coolest feat name ever). He then advances, moving Angelius 2 forward, and sprays Blight Fire over the Wolves and Pureblood. Unfortunately they were on a hill so only one Wolf was killed, but the Pureblood was hit taking six points of damage and was set on fire. Angelius 2 then charges the Pureblood and does 31 points of damage on its Thrust attack. The Pureblood spends a fury to transfer the damage to the Warpwolf. I had totally forgotten they could do that and get the feeling I am now in big trouble. The Angelius continues attacking and manages to do six more points to the Pureblood. Harrier 2 then casts True Strike, charges, and kills a Wolf thereby breaking their unit coherencey, while Forsaken 2 advances behind.

On the left side of the board the Raptors chrage the Bloodtrackers, killing 3 of them before retreating back out of the way. Seraph 1 then moves up and attacks, but even with Glory of Everblight fails to hit. Angelius 1 then moves up and pegs off the Bloodtracker Huntress, which causes them to run. The Swamp Gobbers then move into the trees and put a cloud on Thagrosh while Forsaken 1 runs right. With all the activations done Dragon Storm takes effect. Angelius 2 manages to put another 5 points on the Pureblood, but when Harrier 2 moves and attacks it as well fails to hit. Angelius 1 and Seraph 1 both move over to support Thagrosh and miss with their shooting attacks. I get a second point for holding the inner left Territory with Seraph 1.

Circle

Kaya drops Forced Evolution and leeches to full. The Bloodtrackers run through the woods but manage to rally, contesting both of the left hand Territories. To add to that the fire goes out on the Pureblood and Myantek is all set to counter attack. The Wolves in formation charge Harrier 2, but don't manage to kill it. It is left at one wound with no Mind or Spirit. The rest of the Wolves move to form coherency and one dies to a free strike as they move. The Argus runds forward while the Wold Wyrd puts Arcane Killer on the Pureblood. The Pureblood then spends a fury on Ferocity (re-roll missed melee attacks) and uses its 3 initial attacks and 5 fury to keep buying attacks on Angelius 1 until it dies a squishy death. Hemmed in by Harrier 2 Laris attacks it, but misses. Kaya heals the Warpwolf for 2 points and casts Mistwalker. The Warpwolf then regenerates a further point and the turn ends with the Swamp Gobbers moving over to put a smoke cloud on Kaya, Laris, and the Warpwolves.

Turn 4

Legion

Thagrosh leeches. Harrier 1 frenzies and destroys a Shifting Stone. Harrier 1 still has a fury but passes Threshold. The Raptors move forward and shoot at the Bloodtrackers, killing one. They then use their second move to engage them. Forsaken 2 now charges the single Wolf of Oboros engaging Thagrosh. It spends a fury point to boost the hit, but still misses. Now I have a problem. Forsaken 1 runs to the far right to contest the zone. I then do some precise measuring and find that Thagrosh can stay the same distance away from the Wolf but circle around him towards the Pureblood. Thagrosh's base size plus reach is enough to engage the Pureblood so Thagrosh casts Glory of Everblight and kills it, using his second attack to kill another Wolf.

Seraph 1 Slipstreams Angelius 1 and shoots up the Argus for 10 points, destroying its Body. Angelius 1 now charges the Warpwolf, killing it with a single Thrust attack, from which Kaya reaves the fury. The Angelius uses its Ravenous move to reach Kaya and whacks her for 9 points of damage. Harrier 2 moves to Kaya, casts True Strike, and does 3 more points to Kaya. Lastly the Swamp Gobber edge forward some more and put the 5 inch swamp cloud down over Thagrosh. I get no points because the Bloodtrackers are contesting both the left side zones.

Circle

It's do or die time for Kaya and she leeches herself full. The Wolves seize their moment and charge Thagrosh. The first CMA whacks him for 12 points, at which point I forget that Thagrosh can make a lesser beast. But I get lucky and the second CMA misses while the third only does 3 more points of damage. Laris activates next and takes 12 points from a free strike when walking away from the Angelius. Kaya then teleports to Laris and begins to pound away on Thagrosh, but can only reduce him to 1 wound. As the last thing in range to attack the Argus seizes its moment. Unfortunately it misses its first attack and the second one bounces due its lack of Body.

Turn 5

Legion

Thagrosh leeches for full. He is standing next to a Kaya who has no fury and there is a Harrier within his control area. Kaya explodes in an Erruption of Ash.

Afterword

Defenstrator

Tight game. I felt Myantek did a good job denying me scenario points while massing her force by my warlock. A better run of luck and the game would have been hers. This match Hubris turned out to be a much larger factor. Trapped by the Wolf it was impossible for Thagrosh to escape. All I could do was kill the largest threats and brace for the coming attack. I found the spells to be about as useful as my last match. Glory of Everblight was dead solid. It didn't give me super high rolls this game but I didn't suffer any runs of bad luck with my beasts. Dragon's Blood was solid for pushing the Angelius to ARM 19. Unnatural Aggerssion on the other hand didn't do anything because Myantek just chose to withdraw and then attack something else instead. And neither of the direct damage spells were even cast.

Thagrosh himself seems to be cementing a reputation of being mad, bad, and dangerous to know. He is not a warlock your opponent can expect to survive if they end their activation too near to him, and that engenders a certain healthy repsect in your opponent. They want to get close, but they worry about moving too close and getting insta-gibbed. The rest of the army seems to be working alright, but I could definately see trading a Harrier for a Shredder. The lack of defensive spells and animi is pretty nerve wracking at times. Aside from that it seems to be working alright, although I worry about fighting lists that have a larger ranged complement.

Myantek

One more point. If Defenstrator had remembered to pop Shredders as Thagrosh got hurt I don't really think it would have changed my strategy that much. I might have saved up a Fury to heal the Argus and maybe he might have done a little damage. As it was I really didn't have the choice. It was a do or die turn. I either killed Thagrosh and won or tried to hold him off a turn and lost to scenario when the Raptors killed the Bloodtrackers to get those two zones they were contesting. Killing the Swamp Gobbers would have given him the last point he needed.

I wish I'd had a War Wolf rather than the Swamp Gobbers. When I made the army I had exactly 15 points left so I threw the Gobbers in there for completeness. The War Wolf would have been more useful (if I owned one anyway). I would have had to drop a Wolf, but I've got 12 of them.

I'm still working on balancing aggression. I think I could have done more with the Bloodtrackers. It was only my second time playing with them and I haven't really figured out their tactics quite right. Same with the Blackclad. It was the first time I played with him. I almost teleported him right to one of the Forsaken but decided to wait a turn as Defenstrator turned his attention to destroying the Bloodtrackers. Then he was dead and I'd missed my chance.

Woldwardens

I've finished up the Woldwardens. They've been staring at me for a while. One of them from the moment the Woldwardens were first released and I could add it to the battle box.

Woldwatchers

Woldwatcher #1

Woldwatcher #2

I had originally intended to leave the deep indentations black but Defenstrator convinced me to paint them red so that the 'watchers would tie in with the rest of the army and to give them a bit more definition. I'm glad he did, I'm pleased with how these guys look.

Baldur vs Lylyth - Ridge Raiders

Ridge Raiders - 500 points Baldur vs Lylyth

We pulled out the Steamtroller 4 scenarios and rolled to choose which one we going to play. Neither of us were particularily excited about Ridge Raiders but decided to give it a shot.

Circle:

Baldur, the Stonecleaver
Warpwolf
Woldwarden
Woldwatcher
Beastmaster + 5 Tharn Ravagers
Sentry Stones

496 points.

Legion:

Lylyth, Messenger of Everblight
Teraph
Seraph
Seraph
The Forsaken
The Forsaken
Raptors
Shepherd
Strider Deathstalker
Swamp Gobbers
Feralgeist

496 points.

Set Up

Defenstrator had picked up a new river template and was looking for a chance to use it so the lower left hand corner of the board was a river bend. On either side of the river was a stand of trees with a third stand in the middle. The right hand side of the board was a small hill and a small ruin. I won the dice off for deployment and chose to take the first turn.

The Warpwolf and the Ravagers were placed as close to the centre forest as I could manage with Baldur just a little bit in front of the Tharn. The Woldwarden was placed near the trees by the river.

On the Legion side, Defenstrator set up the Teraph in the ruins with a Forsaken on either side with the Shepherd on the left of the group. The Feralgeist, Seraph , Lylyth and Seraph 2 were near the centre of the deployment zone with the Swamp Gobbers slightly behind them and the Raptors on the far side of the river by the trees.

When the advance deploy phase came I placed the Sentry Stone mid table by the bend in the river and the Woldwatcher by the Woldwarden. Defenstrator placed the Strider Deathstalker at the top point of the ruins.

Circle Turn 1

The Sentry Stone produced a Mannikin behind it near the river and Baldur cast Earth's Blessing on the Warpwolf before walking into the trees. The Warpwolf gave himself +2 ARM and promptly ignored the fact that he could now walk through the trees by walking up the clear ground between the trees and the hill.

On the other side of the board the Woldwarden moved up beside the trees and was followed by the Woldwatcher who put Vigilance on the big guy to save him from a Raptor charge.

The Ravagers ran into the trees and took up position around Baldur while the Mannikin moved up the river to a place that it could have been created but I wasn't thinking about where I actually wanted it to be.

Legion Turn 1

The Raptors walked through the forest to the river and shot the Mannikin to kill it. As fast cavalry they used their free move to then push up the board, with only one of them making it to the other side of the river.

The Deathstalker aimed and shot at the Ravagers doing 2 points to one of them while Seraph 1 cast Slipstream and moved sideways to place the Teraph forward. The Teraph then moved into the ruins and shot shot at the Sentry Stone. (What's the point of Invisibilty when your main opponent has so many things that have Eyeless Sight?). The Teraph was out of range and the shot deviated away to do nothing. The beast then riled for 3 Fury. Forsaken 1 moved up to claim this Fury.

Seraph 2 cast Slipstream and moved forward, pulling Lylyth with it. Lylyth then moved forward herself and shot at the Ravagers. With boosting to hit and damage she managed to kill 2 of them. Moving up behind Seraph 2 the Swamp Gobbers laid a smoke template in front of Lylyth.

The Shepherd, Forsaken 2 and Feralgeist all moved into the ruins.

Circle Turn 2

Baldur leached to full Fury and upkept Earth's Blessing and the Sentry Stone created a Mannikin towards the ruins.

The Woldwarden moved forward and cast Earth Spikes at the Raptors managing to kill one of them. The Woldwatcher followed it and, once again, cast Vigilance on the big guy. The Mannikin moved over to hug the ruin.

Baldur moved forward to the edge of the trees and cast Rapid Growth between the ruin and the hill. I couldn't get the template exactly where I wanted to because there wasn't quite enough room for the whole forest but it was close enough. He then burnt a Fury and then feated.

The Ravagers charged the Deathstalker and killed her and the Warpwolg took advance of Earth's Blessing and moved in behind Baldur.

Legion Turn 2

Defenstrator had planned poorly for this turn and could only leach 2 Fury to Lylyth so she decided to cut herself up to full. Following Baldur's lead Lylyth also feated and shot at the Woldwatcher for 8 points.

Seraph 2 moved forward and shot at the Woldwarden with 1 extra shot doing a total of 11 points. The Shepherd simply moved in front of the Teraph.

Seraph 1 shot the Ravagers with 4 extra shots and killed 2 of them plus the Beastmaster. The Teraph moved in front of Seraph 1. It attacked, and killed, another Ravager. Being Fearless has its advantages and so the remaining Ravager did not turn tail and flee.

The Swamp Gobbers moved behind Seraph 2 and laid a gas cloud in front of the beast and Lylyth. Forsaken 1 ran to the ruins while Forsaken 2 moved around the ruins to get the 3 Fury off Seraph 1. The Raptors Double Shot the Woldwatcher for 3 points and spread out over the ridge.

Circle Turn 3

Baldur leached to full Fury and dropped Earth's Blessing and Rapid Growth. The Sentry Stone produced a new Mannikin as close to Lylyth as it could manage.

The last Ravager charged the Teraph and missed. Twice. Defenstrator had managed to kill all the Ravagers except the one carrying the Heart Token and the boy can't produce. Sigh.

The Sentry Stone stole Fury from Lylyth and from Seraph 2. The Mannikin by the ruins stepped forward and destroyed itself to spray Lylyth. It used Fury from the Sentry Stone to boost but still managed to miss. Time to throw something else at Lylyth to try and soften her up a little more.

The Woldwarden cast Earth Spikes at her and not only hit, but managed a critical hit knocking the Legion warlock down. She transferred the 7 points of damage to Seraph 2. The Woldwatcher moved forward into the river and took it's chance to actually hit something. The 14 points it inflicted were also transferred to Seraph 2 and the beast was killed.

The newly created Mannikin walked forward to Lylyth and turned into a forest. Baldur then used that forest to Forest Walk to engage Lylyth and begin pounding on her with his big, stone sword. The first 12 points he did were transferred to the Teraph but that was the last of Lylyth's Fury and the next attack killed her.

Myantek

Woo! It worked!

When I feated at the end of my second turn I was a little concerned that it was too soon and I might have benefited from waiting a bit and trying for a scenario win. I didn't think that I could win on the scenario because Defenstrator's army was just that much bigger than mine and I didn't think I'd be able to get rid of enough models before he got rid of enough of mine. So when he moved to a position that I liked I took the chance of feating. Something I've noticed with Baldur is that people get so caught up in where they can't move they sort of overlook where they can move. Worst case scenario he would've remembered to Bushwhack Lylyth and she'd be farther away. I would've had to switch targets but I would have cleared out the beasts a bit. I have to admit that the critical knockdown on the Earth Spikes was a nice piece of luck.

I've tweeked my Baldur army and I'm a lot happier with it now. The Warpwolf will probably be replaced by a Satyr (whenever it manages to get built) but the Earth's Blessing spell that Baldur has lets everything move through difficult terrain which is handy. I had no worries for Fury (even though the Warpwolf didn't do anything) it was nice to have it hanging around with my warlock.

The moral of this story is to pay attention and don't rush. My first elementry mistake was when the Forsaken claimed the fury on the Teraph. I had already earmarked that in my head for Lylyth, but when I came to the Forsaken's actiavation I grabbed the fury, because that's what he always does.

My much bigger mistake was failing to Bushwhack with Lylyth. I was so caught up with hosing the Woldwarden down with the Seraph that I literaly forgot to make Lylyth's second attack and to back up. After the Seraph was done, I realised how badly I just screwed myself. Sure enough, Myantek did not let this mistake go to waste. She made aboslutely sure that Lylyth was going to be dead. So much so that there wasn't much left for Baldur to do once he finally teleported into the forest beside her.

I don't really have a set list, I tend to just stuff stuff together. If I had a do over I would certainly drop a Forsaken. With just three lights and no lessers I had no problem getting by with just one, and with my 4 spare points I could have taken another Deathstalker instead.

Sentry Stones and Mannikins

Rocks and trees and trees and rocks... The painting of my Baldur army continues (although this finishes off my Kaya army) with the Sentry Stones and Mannikins. I have two units but one of the Mannikins lost an arm and I'm waiting on a bits order to finish him off.

I wanted a subtle red on the rocks because I didn't want them to really stand out.

Battlebox Battle: Lylyth vs Kaya

278 points Legion vs 275 points Circle Battlebox fight.

So, it's been a while since the blog was updated. Games were played, painting was done, blog was neglected. So it's back to the grind and finishing things. One of the things done was that I finaly finished Lylyth. She's been in an almost done state for over a year, and now that she is finaly done we thought it might be nice to have a quick fully painted core game.
Legion:
Lylyth, Herald of Everblight
Carnivean
Shredder
Shredder
Shredder
Shredder

Circle:
Kaya the Wildborne
Warpwolf
Argus
Argus

Set Up
On the right side of the board were two hills, with a forest between them. The centre was clear, while the left side had a forest at each end with the Cryx Necro-mine thing from Gale Force 9 between them.

I (Defenstrator) won the toss to go first. I set up on the centre right of the board and, going from right to left, set up Shredder 1, Shredder 2, Shredder 3, Carnivean, with Lylyth beside but slightly behind the Carniven and Shredder 4 beside her. Myantek set up opposite with Argus 1, Kaya, Warpwolf, Argus 2.

Scenario
We played a straight assassination battle.

Turn 1
Legion
Everybody except Lylyth ran. The Carnivean and Shredder 4 moved into the trees while the other three Shredders moved up the centre. Lylyth walked up behind the trees and puts Tenacity on eveyone except Shredder 1.
Circle
Argus 2 walked on to the hill and riled. Warpwolf takes +2 ARM and moved onto the hill. Argus 1 moved onto the hill beside and ahead of the Warpwolf. Kaya then moved behind the Warpwolf and put Rager on the Warpwolf and Cloak of Mists on Argus 1.

Turn 2
Legion
Funnily enough for an army made out of eyeless sight models that Cloak of Mists now put me in a bad position. I had hoped to snipe at range to force them towards me, but Lylyth has no eyeless sight so my closest target was the Warpwolf. If I moved close enough to shoot it then Argus 1 would surely just run up for a Kaya assassination run. So manuevering was going to be a bit tricky.

My turn started and I realised that I had moved Lylyth so that her control zone no longer included Shredder 1. Whoops. So Lylyth leached only 4 and Shredder 1 checked for frenzy, which he fortunately passed.
Shredder 4 moved forward, close to the edge of the trees. Shredder 2 went Rabid, walked up beside Shredder 4, and cast Tenacity on itself. The Carnivean moved up beside them. Shredder 3 moved partially into the trees and cast Teancity on the Carinvean, while Shredder 1 moved over to get near Lylyth. Lylyth then walked up behind her wall of beasts and used her Arcing Fire to shoot over them into the Warpwolf, who took a measly 2 points of damage. That was followed by casting Bad Blood on the Warpwolf.

Circle
Kaya leeched all the fury and took 2 points of damage from Bad Blood, and upkept both Rager and Cloak of Mists. Myantek decided that attacking into the woods was a losing propostion and so decided to manuever some more.

Argus 1 ran to the table centre followed by Argus 2. The Warpwolf took +2 ARM, walked up by Argus 2 and Regenerated the 2 points of damage it had taken. Kaya moved behind the Warpwolf.

Turn 3
Legion
Lylyth leeched all the fury. Seeing Kaya circling around she cast Tenacity on everyone and moved back. Shredder 1 walked back towards the table centre. Shredders 2, 3, and 4 went Rabid and did the same. The Carnivean ran to join them.
Circle
Kaya leeched and continued to upkeep Rager and Cloak of Mists. Argus 1 and 2, and the Warpwolf, all ran back to the hill. The Warpwolf riled for two more fury. Kaya then cast Spirit Door to move over beside Argus 2.

Turn 4
Legion
Lylyth leeched all. Shredder 4 went Rabid and put Tenacity on himself, then walked into the trees. Shredder 3 did the same. Lylyth moved up behind this little fleshwall and used Arcing Fire to shoot the Warpwolf, this time destroying its Spirit with a boosted dmaage roll. Lylyth then cast Bad Blood again and camped on 1 fury point. Shredder 2 went Rabid and ran up beside Lylyth, The Carnivean and Shredder 1 walked over to end up near them.
Circle
Kaya leeched everything and took 3 more points of damage from Bad Blood, putting the total at 5 wounds. Kaya upkept nothing. Argus 1 walked up to Shredder 3, but bounced off the surprisingly tough Shredder. Kaya then made her move and cast Spirit Door, ending up within reach of Lylyth. Kaya attacked and Lylyth transfered 11 points of damage to Shredder 1. Kaya then feated and took six more fury. She continued to attack Lylyth, and missed, then hit for 8 points of damage, and then missed again. At the end of this turn Myantek conceeded, since a wounded Kaya had no fury and was standing next to Lylyth, 3 Shredders, and a Carnivean, with Lylyth still having her feat to use.
Afterword:
Defenstrator
A tight little game. One thing I found interesting was that I didn't feel over pressured by the amount of fury I had to deal with. When I play larger forces fury is always strictly accounted for. As soon as I get more than 3 fury over what the warlock can take in goes a Forsaken. In this game I had 12 fury on a 5 fury warlock, but the only time I got into trouble was when I wandered a Shredder out of my own control area. Of course I never had a crazy attacking turn where I would have been stuck with the aftermath either. Still, it was fun to go back to basics.

Probably the toughest part of this game was that neither of us was willing to engage except on our own terms. We had tiny armies that circled each other for awhile before the end suddenly came. I couldn't afford to send the Carnivean in against anything but the Warpwolf. Pouncing on an Argus would just get it killed by a counter attacking Warpwolf. I also couldn't afford to get too close to Myantek's army unless I wanted beasts to charge out, hurt me, and be Spirit Doored back to safety.

At the same time Myantek didn't dare get too close either. An isolated Argus could have easily been torn apart by Shredders, and Lylyth herself could just keep plinking and moving away with her bow. I ended up making a wall for Lylyth to hide behind and shoot at what I could, hoping to bait Myantek too close. As it was I screwed up. Kaya was able to make the assassination run and if Myantek had rolled the Crit Knockdown Kaya would have beaten Lylyth's head in. As it was I got lucky and Kaya wasn't able to finish the job.

Myantek
All I needed was doubles. The thing about Kaya is that she's all about moving the battle to where she wants it to be. Legion sort of nullifies that strategy by being able to ignore half the things Kaya can use to her advantage. It becomes a game of small maneuvers until one person makes a mistake or takes the chance. As it was I probably shouldn't have taken the chance.

I wanted the Argus close enough to let Kaya jump on Lylyth but I didn't want it doing any damage to the Shredder to let Lylyth transfer damage and then get more Fury to do more transfers. He was just going to be a Kaya delivery device. I was hoping to get to position where either Kaya or the Warpwolf could charge but the wall of Shredders was preventing that. Even so, I thought I had a fairly good shot at pulling down Lylyth because she's really not that tough. Unfortunately the dice were not quite with me. Kaya was left exposed, vulnerable and (even though Defenstrator wanted to roll out the end "just to be sure") dead.

Playing with two Arguses (Argui? Argi? whatever) was interesting as there's just better things in the Circle tool box to play with. It was nice to see fully painted armies on the table too. Even if it was just the battle box.
