Legion vs Circle

Rhyas vs Kaya - Killbox, 35 Points

It's been a long time since the last battle report. Myantek and I have finally gotten round to another one. Wanting to make it straightforward we played the scenario Killbox and just had at each other.

Wolves of Oboros - Leader and 9 grunts
Wolves of Oboros Chieften & Standard

Scenario

Killbox

Mark the center of the table and center a 24" square area there with its sides parallel to the table edges. That is the killbox. Starting on turn 3, aplayer automatically loses the game if he ends his own turn with his warcaster/ warlock outside the killbox. Victory is by killing the enemy warcaster/ warlock, having the enemy warcaster/ warlock leave thekillbox, or (if time expires) having the most army points of models (not including fleeing models, wild warbeasts, or warrior models with less than CMD 1) inside the killbox.

Also we were doing times turns of 10 minutes with one 5 minute extension during the game.
Setup

I won the roll and elected to set up first. The strength of my Rhyas army is in melee and I wanted to close the distance relatively quickly. I set up with Rhyas and the Shredder in the centre with the Swordsmen around them. Behind them was the Vessel while the Carnivean and Soldier set up to the right in the trees.

Myantek put her Pureblood on my left with Kaya and the two Ferals flanking her in the centre. The Wolves set up behind the forest.

After this the I advance deployed the Striders on my right flank in the forest while Myantek advance deployed her Shifting Stones in the centre in front of Kaya..

Turn 1

Legion

Rhyas casts Occultation on the Swordsmen and Rapport on the Carnivean before advancing. The Swordsmen run into the centre while the Shredder walks up and puts Tenacity on Rhyas. The Spawning Vessel moves forward and camps out behind the Swordsmen, although it's starting to lag behind. The Carnivean, Nephilim Soldier, and Striders all run up the right side, waiting to ambush anyone who moves into the forest. The Shepherd runs forward and takes position behind the Carnivean.

Circle

The Pureblood turns Ghostly and advances behind the hill. Feral 1 runs beside him warping for +2 ARM. The Argus gives Tracker to Feral 2 and advances into the woods. Feral 2 warps for +2 ARM  and runs into the woods. Kaya casts Occultation on the Wolves and advances to the Shifting Stones. The Wolves advance to support the beasts while the Stones change formation to block LOS to Kaya.

Turn 2

Legion

Rhyas reaves the the fury and upkeeps Rapport. The Striders make the first move and line up to CRA the Argus for 10 points, then Reform back into the forest. The Carnivean puts Spiny Growth on the Soldier and moves forward to spray Feral 2, but misses with a boosted to hit roll. The Swordsmen then run and spread out, blocking the charge lane to the Carnivean. The Shredder moves up a bit and puts Tenacity on Rhyas again while the Shepherd advances and uses Condition to take the fury off the Carnivean. Rhyas then advances and puts Spiny Growth on the Carnivean. The turn ends with the Soldier just riling for 2 fury and the Spawning Vessel advancing some more.

Circle

Kaya reaves all the fury and upkeeps Occultation. The Argus gives Tracker to Feral 2 again and advances towards Kaya. Feral 2 warps for +2 ARM and charges the Swordsmen in front of the Carnivean, killing 2. The Vessel is out of range to collect Corpse tokens. Feral 1 warps for +2 Str and does a Push power  Attack on the Pure Blood, shoving him forward and inch The Pureblood now has the movement to get through the onstructive part of the hill while Ghostly, so he advances and sprays, killing 2 more Swordsmen but missing the boosted attack roll on Rhyas. Kaya then activates anduses Spirit Door on Feral 2, heals the Argus for two points, uses her feat Wild Mastery to grab fury off her beasts, uses Spirit Door on the Pureblood, casts Soothing Song, and heals the Argus a bit more. The Shifting Stones then heal the Argus for 3 points.

Myantek had used her extension this turn but still ran out of time before she could move the Wolves.

Turn 3

Legion

Rhyas reaves to full and upkeeps Rapport. The Striders advance and shoot the Argus through the forest for 5 points before reforming back to the Swordsmen. Rhyas casts Dash, Spint Growth on the Carnivean, and advances forward a bit. The Swordsmen chrage/run with one making it to the Shifting Stones and killing one. The Shredder advances and puts Tenacity on Rhyas. The Carnivean puts Spiny Growth on the Soldier and advances forward to spray the Argus for 12 more points but bounce off another Shifting Stone. The Soldier advances up behind the Carnivean.

Circle

Kaya reaves full and upkeeps Occultation again. The Shifting Stones teleport back and are joined by the retreating Argus. The Pureblood turns Ghostly and advances to the front Swordsman, mushing him. Feral 2 warps for +2 SPD and to my horror is just withing charge range of Rhyas, managing to just reach with the 1/2 inch melee range. Boosts to hit at MAT 9 due to Kayas Pack Hunters ability, and misses. The second attack does hit Rhyas for 12 damage. She boosts to hit with the third attack, and misses again. Feeling thoroughly robbed Kaya Spirit Doors Feral 2 in front of her and casts Soothing Song. Feral 1 advances and riles for 2 fury while the Wolves shuffle up.

Turn 4

Legion

Rhyas reaves and upkeeps Rapport again. The Nephilim Soldier casts Massacre on the Carnivean and advances into the trees in front of the Wolves. With its free chrage the Carnivean goes barreling into the Pureblood. It's assaulting spray hits the Pureblood but misses Feral 2 behind it. The Carnivean then tears apart the Pureblood. Rhys casts Dash, uses her feat, and camps some fury. The Swordsmen, including the Champion and Abbot chrage Kaya and Feral 2. Kaya is missed with all attacks but the Feral is cut down. The Striders advance to support the Soldier.

Circle

Kaya reaves and upkeeps nothing. She also starts the turn and advances into and kills the Abbot, Chapmion, and a Swordsmen. The Wolves chrage and kill another Swordsmen but can't quite get to the Carnivean. Feral 1 chrages the Carnivean now that the lane is clear and promptly rolls double 1 to miss the attack. It attacks some more and mauls the Carnivean but it's not enough for the kill.

At this point time runs out. With both warlocks alive it comes down to points, which I win becuase of the death of the two Warpwolves.

Afterward

Defensstrator

I would have won even if Myantek had killed the Carnivean, but by only 1 point, so a pretty close game really. Not to mention that it was only due to luck that Rhyas wasn't torn into little pieces. I really thought I was far enough back, but it's hard to tell with that tiny control area.

So, stuff I learned. If you're taking the Spawning Vessel either put aside the 3 points for the whole shebang or don't bother. I got two corpse tokens all game. The problem of taking the minimum is that it doesn't move fast enough to keep up and the range is shorter, with the two problems compounding with each other. Also, I realised afterwards I could have moved and feated with Rhyas first, then used the Massacred charge attack into the Pureblood to place the Carnivean at the back of its base and in range of Kaya. I'm pretty sure MAT 8 and boosting could have finished the job. Instead I relied on the Swordsmen, and even the Champions MAT 8 just couldn't do the job.

Myantek

I feel like my dice deserted me.  C'mon!  Rhyas was standing right there!  The Feral should have been able to tear her apart.  I had a pretty good set up for Kaya.  She was able to send beasts out to atack and then bring them back into a protected zone and away from stuff that could really do them harm.  (Though the Carnivean should have been at least mostly dead... stupid dice.)

The only thing that I didn't like about my game is that I kept running out of time before moving my Wolves.  They eneded up behind some trees and out of it when I had intended that they jump out and attack something.  I just never got the chance.

Legion vs Circle

Lylyth vs Kaya - Destruction, 35 Points

Been a long dry spell since the last battle report. We've mainly been playing Warmachine so we decided to give our Hordes forces a spin.

vs

Argus
Wolves of Orboros- Leader and 9 Grunts
Wolves of Oboros Cheiften and Standard

Scenario

Destruction

Summary: Players attempt to destroy two objectives on the opponent's side of the board.

Place four large based objectives 14" from the back and 14" from the side of the board, with one at each corner. Each player's objectives are non-living friendly Faction models. Each has DEF 5, ARM 20, and 20 damage boxes as well as the following qualities: 360 degree front arc; does not activate; cannot move, be moved, or be placed; does not suffer continous effects, cannot be knocked down or made stationary, cannot be targeted by attacks or damaged on the first round.

The game would last for 80 minutes.

Victory Condition

Players earn 1 control point for each of their opponents structures they destroy. The first player to earn 2 control points immediately wins the match.

If time runs out before a player has won the match via scenario or assassination victory, the player with the most control points wins. If control points are tied, the player with the most points left wins.

Setup

The structures are placed on the table. The large bases are represented by four of my Cygnar jacks.

I set up first with the Raptors on the far left behind the crater, the Carnivean in the centre with Seraph 1 beside it and Shepherd 1 behind that. Lylyth and the Shredder lurked in the forest with Seraph 2 on the far right supported by Shepherd 2.

Myantek set up with a refused flank with the Wolves Oborus in the centre with the Pure Blood to the right. The two Ferals, Kaya, and the Argus were further right opposite Seraph 2. The Shifting Stones advance deploy 6" in front of them.

Turn 1

Legion

The timer is set and starts counting down the 80 minutes. The turn starts with the Raptors running and then taking their free move to get 23" up the board. And for the last time I note, since errata has just been released that changes this rule so that you can't get the free move after you run. All the beasts run forward with the Seraphs keeping the rear of their bases in the trees. Lylyth moves behind the forest and puts Spiny Growth on the Carnivean and Tenacity on the Seraphs. The Shredder advances beside Lylyth and puts Tenacity on her. The Shepherds run behind behind the Seraphs.

Circle

Feral 1 takes +2 ARM and advances into the Shifting Stones. Feral 2 becomes Ghostly thanks to the Pure Blood's ability and runs through the crater. The Pure Blood also turns Ghostly and walks into the centre of the crater to get cover. The Argus advances and puts Tracker on Feral 1. Kaya then puts Occulation on the Wolves to give them stealth, which won't do anything against the Seraphs but will stop the Raptors from shooting them up. She then advances beside the Argus. The Wolves advance through the crater to support the Pure Blood and Feral 2. The Shifting Stones then teleport Feral 1 forward.

Turn 2

Legion

Lylyth leaches everything. The Shredder puts Tenacity on Lylyth. Lylyth Slipstreams and advances into the forest, dragging Seraph 2 forward 2". She shoots Feral 2 for 2 points of damage and then casts Parasite on it, automaticly hitting thanks to the Witch Mark on her bow. With Feral 2 now at -3 ARM thanks to Parasite, and Seraph 2 now within 10" of Feral 2 thanks to being Slipstreamed up by Lylyth, Seraph 2 aims and unloads 4 shots into Feral 2. I'm expecting it to disintegrate under this onslaught but the rolls are terrible and Seraph 2 hits once for 11 more points of damage.

Seraph 1 Slipstreams and moves to drag Lylyth back. Shepherd 1 takes the fury the Shredder. The Carnivean moves behind the Seraphs. On the opposite side the Raptors charge the structure but role low for 14 points of damage.

Circle

Kaya leaches to full and upkeeps Occulation. She advances and casts Spirit Fang at Seraph 2 but misses, then heals Feral 2 for 1 point. Feral 2 then warps for +2 SPD and charges Serpah 2, killing it. The Wolves charge Seraph 1 and use the Power Swell for an extra die of damage, hammering it down to 6 points of life. Feral 1 takes +2 ARM and runs forward. The Pure Blood becomes Ghostly and advances.

Turn 3

Legion

Lylyth leaches full and upkeeps Parasite. She activates first, heals Seraph 1 for a point, Slipstreams, moves and drags Seraph 2 out of engagement with the Wolves. She then feats and shoots at Feral 2, and somhow misses. She buys another attack and hits. By doing this I screwed up, becuase I somehow got confused in my head over which Feral I had shot up the turn before. I should have shot Feral 1 and put Parasite on it since my idea was to kill both of them in one turn.

Needless to say the Carnivean charges the wounded Feral 2 for free thanks to Lylyth having shot him with her bow. The assault spray attack hits both Ferals, and the Carnivean casually tears apart Feral 2 and casts Spiny Growth. Shepherd 1 charges the Wolves and kills one, trying to tie them up. The Shredder goes Rabid, advances through the trees, and kills two more. Seraph 1 then advances and pumps three shots into Feral 1, leaving him with just his body. Shepherd 2 then advances and heals the Seraph for a point. The Raptors destroy the structure and then use their free move to advance towards the other one.

Circle

Kaya leaches to full. The Wolves charge and kill Shepherd 1 and the Shredder. Lylyth reaves a fury. The Pure Blood warps for +2 Strength and charges the Carnivean, hurting it badly and destroying its Mind, but taking 7 points of damage in return from Spiny Growth. The Argus advances and casts Tracker on Feral 1, giving it pathfinder and 360 degree LOS. Kaya then advances, heals Feral 1 for five points, uses her feat, and then heals it for five more points. Feral 1 then warps for +2 Strength and charges the Carnivean, and thanks to Tracker is able to engage Seraph 1 in its rear arc. Burning the rest of its fury it finishes both the Carnivean and Seraph 1.

Things are looking bad, with Lylyth so close to two heavy beasts with nothing to support her except a Shepherd, but then the alarm goes off and time is called, meaning Legion wins on scenario.

Conclusion

Defenstrator

Tight game. I had expected to kill both the Ferals in one turn, which would have left only the Pure Blood to properly tear down the Carnivean. The Wolves might have done it eventually but by then the Raptors would be at the next objective. Unfortunately I screwed up, and that left Feral 1 alive which not only finished the Carnivean, but thanks to Tracker was able to destroy my other Seraph at the same time.

The thing that probably hurt me the most was that I was going for the mission objective. Since I was 10 points down in that fight Myantek was just able to power through me, hoping to kill my army and then just destroy the unguarded structures. Luckily for me this wasn't a four turn game or she probably would have.

Myantek
I needed one more turn. I could've won with one more turn I think.
Looking at this scenario, and Defenstrator's army, I felt I had two choices at the beginning. Only the Wolves can act independantly. They could've gone for the post on the right of the board, trying to get through the Raptors, and then using Power Swell on the charge at the objective. I probably could have tied up the Raptors for a bit, but they would've been too far away for Occulation and there's no guantee that they would've destroyed the objective on one charge. The other choice was just to go through Defenstrator's army on the other side. Clearing out some of the heavies and leaving either Lylyth or the objective undefended. I went with the second choice.
It almost worked. The Raptors had been unable to destroy the objective on the charge so my Wolves had free rein for two turns. Keeping a Seraph occupied (almost killing it too) and allowing my heavies to clear out his heavies. If I'd been able to get to my next turn and kill Lylyth it'd be insta-win. Or the Feral or the Pureblood could probably have destroyed the objective in a turn and that would have brought a tie, that I think I would have won due to killing more stuff. That's assuming that the Raptors wouldn't have been able to destroy the second objective but I think that's a fair assumption.

Krueger vs Saeryn, Break the Line

6 Druids of Orboros
Wayfarer

Legion:

Saeryn, Omen of Everblight
Angelius
Seraph
Seraph
5 Raptors
Forsaken
Swamp Gobbers

Scenario

We played Break the Line from the Steamroller 4 rules. Basically it's a control the board scenario. A player wins by controlling 2 zones on his or her side of the table and one zone on the opponent's side.

Set Up

I won the roll and elected to go first. Krueger got placed close to the centre of the table by some trees. The Woldwyrd settled in slightly behind him with a Woldwardan on the far edge of either side of his control area. The Druids hid behind the hill on the far left of the table and the Waywafer took up a position on the far right. When the advanced deployment phase came the Shifting Stones were placed in front of each of the Woldwardens.

Defenstrator set Saeryn up directly opposite Krueger with the Angelius in front of her. The Swamp Gobbers settled in behind her while both Seraphs were placed by the hill on the left of the board with a Forsaken to follow them. On the far right of the table the unit of Raptors were placed behind the ruins.

Circle Turn 1

Woldwarden 1 moved forward into Shifting Stones 1 and put up Undergrowth with the second Woldwarden doing exactly the same thing on the other side of the board.

Krueger cast Skyborne and Wind Storm before moving in front of the trees. The Woldwyrd followed him and was riled for 1 Fury.

The Wayfarer moved up beside Woldwarden 2 and the Druids ran to Woldwarden 1.

Legion Turn 1

The Raptors moved forward onto the hill near the mid-line of the board.

Saeryn cast Respawn on the Angelius and moved forward. The Angelius ran to the ruins.

The Seraphs moved onto the hill and riled for 3 and 2 Fury respectively and the Forsaken moved up to remove the Fury from Serpah 1.

The Swamp Gobbers moved up behind Saeryn and let off a smoke cloud that concealed Saeryn and only touched the Angelius.

Circle Turn 2

So far things were going OK for me. It's pretty much what I expected when battling Defenstrator. I knew I wasn't going to win based on scenario because I couldn't hold a zone on my side from the Raptors so I had to make him hurt this turn. I came up with a plan, started to put it into effect and then screwed up. I finished my turn looked at the table and thought, "Guess this will be a short battle report." Anyway...

The Woldwyrd moved up beside Woldwarden 1 and cast Arkane Killer on it. Krueger cast Skyborne and moved in front of the Woldwyrd and cast Lightning Tendrils on Woldwarden 1. He then cast Windstorm again and let loose his feat. It missed Saeryn, did 2 points to Seraph 2 and 1 point to the Angelius.

The Shifting Stones teleported Woldwarden 2 to the ruins. It attempted to cast lightning at the Seraphs but was just sort. Instead it riled for 1 point and cast Undergrowth. The Druids ran from the Raptors into the trees and the second set of Stones teleported Woldwarden 1 into the ruins.

The Woldwarden then started pounding on the Angelius. The first blow did 12 points! The second blow... missed. Damn. I was hoping for the chain attack to send the Angelius flying. I guess I might as well kill it. Two more hits and the Angelius went down. Only to Respawn 3 inches away. Staring directly at Krueger and liking its lips.

Legion Turn 2

Serpah 1 frenzied! It attacked its buddy and did 15 points taking out Seraph 2's Spirit and Mind! Defenstrator complained about Krueger's feat.

Saeryn moved into the ruins and cast Breath Stealer at Krueger and missed. Defenstrator complained about Krueger's Sky Borne. She then took out her knives and threw them at my warlock doing 2 points of damage.

The Angelius moved in on Krueger and boosted its hit roll. It hits, boosts damage, and Krueger dies. In one blow. Even if Saeryn hadn't hit him. Defenstrator said it had an equal chance of missing. I'm not so sure on that.

Afterword

Myantek

Sigh.

So there are a bunch of things I could have done that I only realised once I finished my turn and shook my head in shame. Placing storm templates in the Angelius' way so it wouldn't be so easy to get to Krueger. Making the other Woldwarden go second and trying to Chain Lightning the Respawned Angelius. I only had to do three points. I might have at least forced Saeyrn to spend some Fury to heal it. I could have moved the Stones and had the Woldwarden trample over to block Krueger. I could've listened to Defenstrator explain Respawn and realise that when I killed the Angelius it was going to come back, away from the Woldwarden and be able to do something.

I still had another turn before Defenstrator was going to be able to win by scenario. I could've made better use of it.

Defenstrator

To be fair, I really did only have an even chance of hitting Krueger. With Sky Borne he is effectively DEF 17, so the Angelius needed an eleven on 3d6. To be honest I was on pins and needles that last turn. One Seraph was useless, the other half dead, meaning Saeryn and Angelius were the only things that could get him. When Saeryn flubbed Breathstealer and damage roll for the knives I thought the game was up. Luckily for me the dice broke my way and Kruger ended up impaled. If I had rolled a ten or less it would have been Saeryn's turn to be standing in the open waiting for death. So I felt this one was tighter than it looked.
